This can be used as a broken beam IR reflector. IR LEDs and phototransistors can be soldered in the LED holes.
populating R1 with a 1k resistor and Q1 with a N-channel MOSFET allows you to control 8 IR LEDs as a group
solder bridging the two receive pads allows you to use 8 IR phototransistors as arduino receivers.
